Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use it on my lips?

Lucas’ Papaw Ointment is ideal for lips if you want to help heal or soothe inflamed, chapped or broken skin.

Is Lucas' Papaw Ointment a moisturiser?

Lucas’ Papaw Ointment helps skin retain its own moisture which stops it from drying out. But the main benefits are the healing qualities of the product. It has no added moisturisers.

Is the petroleum jelly safe?

Lucas Papaw Ointment only uses pharmaceutical grade petroleum jelly that is strictly certified to ensure its safety and quality. USP grade Petrolatums are not mutagenic or toxic.

Petroleum jelly is the “carrier” that supports the active ingredient – fresh fermented papaw. Petroleum jelly does not block pores, is not carcinogenic or toxic. It has been proven to be non-comedogenic (does not block pores) and to not cause allergic reactions (American Academy of Dermatology Invitational on Comedogenicity, 1989)

More information and scientific studies about petroleum jelly can be found in many places online.

Why does there seem like there is only a small amount of papaw in each pack?

The powerful and unique active ingredient in Lucas’ Papaw Ointment is created by fermenting fresh Australian papaws onsite in the Brisbane manufacturing facility. The fermentation process concentrates the powerful enzymes found in papaws. Hundreds of papaws are used to make one batch of concentrate. The fresh fermented concentrate cannot be applied directly to the skin. The concentrate must be distributed within the carrier (petroleum jelly) to achieve the correct concentration for safe and effective application to the skin. It is the same as a pain relief tablet where a small amount of paracetamol (active ingredient) is contained in each tablet (carrier).

What is the TGA? Why is this important?

The TGA is the Therapeutic Goods Administration. They are the regulators in Australia of all therapeutic goods. When a product is listed with the TGA, as Lucas’ Papaw Ointment is, the product must prove its effectiveness against any health claims made, and it must be audited against the Code of Good Manufacturing Practices. The TGA conducts audits on a regular basis to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the product.

Why are the barcodes different on the different sizes of Lucas' Papaw Ointment?

Barcodes on the packaging of the four sizes of Lucas’ Papaw Ointment differ in both the number of digits and the code itself.

Why are sales on this website limited to 2.5 kg?

Lucas’ Papaw Ointment is a complementary medicine rather than just a cosmetic.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia and Australian Customs restrict the quantity of medicines of this type that can be taken out of the country for personal use to only be enough for a three month supply. A reasonable amount of Lucas’ Papaw Ointment for use over three months amounts to approximately 2.5 kg.

Can I use Lucas' Papaw Ointment while I'm pregnant?

Lucas’ Papaw Ointment  has been used safely by many pregnant women over the 105 years we have been in existence.  If you have used it previously and had no issues, there would be no change.

However as we do not know your health status and because people can have reactions to the most natural of ingredients, it is important for you to have a look at our ingredients to see that you can tolerate them.

I think the tube I bought from another website might be a fake. What can I do?

Lucas’ Papaw Remedies has invested in technology in their tubes that allow them to identify fake copies.

It is possible to send your suspect tube to Lucas’ Papaw Remedies for checking.
